University of Stirling v East Stirlingshire 4/08/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire picked up their first 3 points of the new Lowland League campaign with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Stirling University on Saturday.

The Shire were looking for their first win of the season after a tightly contested 1-1 draw with BSC Glasgow, while Stirling University were hoping to maintain their 100% record at their new home, Forthbank.

The Shire threatened to open the scoring early when new summer signing Paul McCafferty broke clear of Stirling University’s backline before placing his shot wide from a tight angle after he had rounded the keeper.

The University side were punished not long after when some slack marking from a corner allowed Shire’s number 4 Ashe to nod home the opener.

Stirling University, not to be disheartened after falling behind, gave themselves a great chance to level the game after drawing a clumsy foul in the penalty area, only to see the penalty saved by the impressive Jamie Barclay in the Shire goal.

Ross Allum, a summer acquisition from Edinburgh City, made Stirling University pay for not taking their chances by doubling the Shire’s lead after he had ghosted in between his markers to nod home the second of the game.

The Shire, now in total control, added a third in fortuitous fashion when Del Ure inadvertently lobbed Stirling University’s goalkeeper when he attempted to hook the ball back into the danger area.

John Sludden’s team, sensing an opportunity to fill their boots, flooded forward again through the energetic Connor Greene, who surged into the box before producing the type of finish new signing Ross Allum would be proud of, to make the score 4-0.

After weathering a flurry of Shire attacks spearheaded by Allum, Stirling University conceded from yet another set piece when Ashe, in similar fashion to his first, found himself totally free in the 6-yard box to make it 5-0 before half time.

Allum, who is fast proving to be an excellent piece of business for John Sludden’s team, rounded off the scoring when he pounced on more sloppy defending to calmly place a side footed effort beyond the onrushing goalkeeper.

John Sludden will be happy with the ruthlessness of his sides display, while Stirling University will be ruing missed chances and some slack defending.

East Stirlingshire welcome Whitehill Welfare next, while Stirling University will hope to bounce back against Gretna 2008.
