The Spartans v East Stirlingshire 24/11/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

A late fightback from East Stirlingshire was not enough to salvage a point as they ended up on the wrong side of a seven-goal thriller against Spartans at Ainslie Park on Saturday.

Blair Atkinson’s hattrick and David Greenhill’s penalty had sent the hosts into a seemingly unassailable 4-1 lead before goals from Paul McCafferty and Ross Allum renewed Shire’s hopes against a side they had failed to beat in five previous attempts.

Shire’s meek loss to Edinburgh University last week further underlined the inconsistencies faced by gaffer Derek Ure.  However, a winless run stretching back to early September had left Spartans faltering in their pursuit of successive titles.

Those inconsistencies were further highlighted when Blair Atkinson volleyed the hosts into an early lead after some chaotic Shire defending allowed the forward too much space.

The misery was compounded further for Shire shortly after when a teasing ball into the box forced Chris McKee into the concession of a penalty which was duly tucked away by David Greenhill.

For the second time in as many games Shire had been sucker punched by two early goals however a rare foray forward by the visitors resulted in an unlikely lifeline when Allum was brought down in the box.  McCafferty stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty away to renew Shire’s belief.

Atkinson ensured that Shire’s hopes were dashed again when he flicked a diving header beyond Barclay before completing his hattrick with a smart poked finish to send his side 4-1 up at the break.

Ure took things into his own hands at the start of the second half when he subbed himself on to inject some much-needed urgency.  However, McKee’s dismissal for a second bookable offence shortly after seemed to make Shire’s job a matter of damage limitation.

The game seemed to be heading towards a comprehensive Spartans victory before Allum, latching onto a hopeful ball forward, turned and smashed in what looked to be a consolation.

However, the ten men scored immediately from the restart after McCafferty’s well placed curling effort nestled in the back of the net to set up an unlikely dramatic finish.

Craig Stevenson’s frustrations culminated into his sending off after he used excessive force to cynically take down McCafferty.  Despite the ensuing skirmish in the centre of the park, Shire failed to produce a remarkable comeback that had seemed unlikely after McKee’s dismissal.

The defeat leaves Shire sixteen points adrift of leaders Kelty Hearts and in a position where building for next season seems like the only way of making their promotion aspirations a reality.
