East Stirlingshire v Linlithgow Rose 10/11/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire progressed to the quarter final of the South Challenge Cup in emphatic fashion as they dispatched of Linlithgow Rose 5-1 at a wet and windy Falkirk Stadium.

The first ever competitive clash between the two sides was poised to be a close one with Derek Ure seeking to relinquish any memory of last weeks 2-0 loss to East Kilbride, a result that has cast his side 10 points adrift in the race for the title, by extending the cup run Shire find themselves on.

Meanwhile, Linlithgow Rose’s aspirations of reaching the next round were very much alive after firing six past Heriot-Watt University just a week prior to ensure a confident journey to Falkirk.

However, Rose’s confidence surely took a knock when Connor Greene stooped low at the back post to bundle Ross Allum’s parried effort into the back of the net to give Shire a rare early goal.

Shire’s quick start proved fruitful with Brisbane, Mcafferty and Allum playing with a verve and swagger that had unfortunately been lacking last week against Kilby.

The home side’s superiority was further emphasised when Allum latched onto Graeme MacGregor’s long ball before turning his man and firing home to double his side’s lead.  The goal will have felt even sweeter for the front man after failing to score in his previous four outings.

Ure’s side started the second half as they had ended the first and were rewarded when McCafferty’s excellent reverse through ball released Allum who, having ended his goal scoring drought, confidently rolled beyond the onrushing keeper.

As the rain intensified so did Shire’s performance with McCafferty further adding to Rose’s misery when he tucked home from Ross Willox’s cutback.

Rose boss Mark Bradley could take heart when his side’s perseverance in the deteriorating conditions brought an unlikely consolation goal through Darren Smith who headed beyond Jamie Barclay.

However, Willox, a midweek acquisition on a loan deal from Peterhead, ensured the home side had the last word when he released David McCaughie who passed into an open goal after having his initial effort saved.

Ure, having ensured safe passage to the quarter final, will hope his side’s cup success will help in his endeavour to improve the team’s inconsistent league form.

That endeavour will begin next week when Shire play host to Edinburgh University who currently find themselves 7th in the table having enjoyed a fairly successful season so far.
