East Stirlingshire crashed out of the Scottish Cup on Saturday after being comfortably beaten 2-0 by Gala Fairydean Rovers at Netherdale Stadium.

Derek Ure’s side arrive in Galashiels amidst something of a purple patch having beaten league leaders Kelty Hearts in the South of Scotland Cup and edging a thrilling encounter with Civil Service Strollers the week prior.

However, Gala could feel confident in the knowledge that they had comprehensively beaten Ure’s side 3-0 in their last meeting and condemned last season’s league champions, Spartans, to a 3-1 defeat in their last outing.

Andy Rodgers, so often Shire’s talisman, showed flashes of quality early but a combination of loose passes and poor first touches ensured Shire’s attacks ended in their infancy.

Shire went close through Rodgers when he produced his side’s first moment of quality when he attempted an audacious chip that very nearly embarrassed Patrick Martin in the Gala goal.

The Shire man’s genius proved to be a fleeting glance of the quality the away side possess as Gala took charge of the first half through Hibs ‘loanee’ Ruari Paton, who having scored in the 3-0 rout at Falkirk Stadium earlier in the season, gave his side the lead after more disastrous Shire defending.

Despite Shire being comfortably second best, they could feel aggrieved when Steven Brisbane appeared to be taken out by Gala keeper Patrick Martin however referee Graham Grainger booked the Shire man for simulation under advisement from his linesman; a decision that was made even more controversial after it seemed that Grainger had initially signalled for a penalty.

Shire produced somewhat of a revival after the interval with Rodgers, Danny Ashe and Adam Murray all spurning great chances although it proved to be a brief showcase of resistance as Ricky Miller, another scorer from that 3-0 demolition earlier in the season, ensured Gala fans could enjoy the closing stages of their progression to the third round of the Scottish Cup when he nodded home from a corner.

Derek Ure will have to pick his men up quickly as they play host to Gretna 2008 next Saturday while Gala can look forward to taking on Lowland League rivals in the next round.
