This afternoon ‘Shire travelled the short distance to Prestonfield to take on East of Scotland Premier Division Linlithgow Rose in what was our 3rd pre-season friendly. The game was once again played behind closed doors to comply with the current Covid 19 restrictions.

The match turned out to be an entertaining one with ‘Shire taking the early initiative and for the 1st 10 minutes of the match pressed the home team back into their own penalty box. However, ‘Shire were unable to create any clear cut chances during this spell.

Gradually Rose came back into the match and in the 28th minute a ball was fired across the ‘Shire penalty box but there were no takers.

‘Shire had a reasonable penalty claim turned down in the next minute when Nicky Low drove into the box from the right and had his left knee clipped but the referee wasn’t interested in the ‘Shire captain’s appeals.

A minute on Rose’s Willis Hare was lucky not to go into the referee’s book following a late tackle on Matty Orr. However a further 2 minutes later the yellow card did come out for the two number 5’s on the pitch, Jordan Tapping and David Brownlie, after a heated coming together.

Immediately after this Low tried his luck with a shot from 25 yards which was held by Rose keeper Lee Wilson.

The home team were creating chances of their own and in the 37th minute Pat Scullion saw his shot from just outside the penalty area go narrowly past the post.

5 minutes before half time the ‘Shire captain had another 25 yard shot but Wilson held easily,

Then in the 41st minute ‘Shire went into the lead courtesy of Jamie Dishington. Gregg Wylde got the ball on the left flank and passed the ball to midfielder on the right of the box. He then cut inside and hit a shot which went through a couple of Rose defenders on the line and into the net.

At half time both teams took the opportunity to make changes to give players valuable pre-season playing time. ‘Shire made 3 changes and Linlithgow Rose made 7.

In a frantic start to the 2nd half both teams traded chances but neither team could find the mark.

1st Willis Hare had a 25 yard shot for the home team which was saved by Ross Connelly and then Andy Rogers hit the side netting from 15 yards.

In the 51st minute Rodgers sent  in a great cross to Sean Brown who was in the clear on the Rose 6 yard line. However, Brown’s 1st time shot came of the post and re-bounded into the arms of the Rose goalkeeper and the score remained at 1-0.

Only 1 minute later Wllis Hare was clean through and shot from just outside the “D” but was unable to bring the scores level as his shot went just wide of the right hand post.

Rose were back on the attack a couple minutes later and really should have scored when Sean Dickson had a shot from just outside of the box which hit the left post and then the ball ran along behind Connelly before a Rose play crossed it back across the penalty box but there were no takers and the chance was lost.

‘Shire weren’t out of it and a clever  56th minute edge of the box free kick was taken short to Craig Henderson on the left whose’ 1st time shot was saved Brian Schwake, the substitute Rose keeper, at the left post.

‘Shire brought on 3 more subs in the 60th minute including a change of goalkeepers, then a final ‘Shire sub was made 10 minutes after this. Rose made their own final sub shortly afterwards.

A speculative long ball from Marty Orr in the 75th minute over the top fell perfectly to the feet of Brown who elected to shoot from the edge of the box only to see his shot flash narrowly by the Rose post.

3 minutes after Brown won the ball 25 yards out and passed to trialist Robbie Young who sent in a shot from 18 yards into the side netting.

The next minute saw an amazing let off for ‘Shire when Jonny Court crashed in a shot from the edge of the ‘Shire box which re-bounded off the right post to his team mate Owen Ronald who then shot from just inside the box, the net bound shot was miraculously cleared off the line by Matty Orr.

With 7 minutes to go another long ‘Shire ball found Brown who shot from the edge of the box flew over the bar.

Then Rose’s substitute trialist had an attempt from the edge of the box but it spun wide of the ‘Shire post.

In the 87th minute ‘Shire extended their lead to 2-0 when an initial shot from Lee Hadden from the right was saved by Schwake but Robbie Young was on hand to score from the re-bound with a strike from the edge of the box.

‘Rose didn’t give up and with a minute to goal pulled the score back to 2-1 from an Owen Ronald penalty after a Rose shot had hit Orr on the arm, though he had been unable to get of the way.

The resulting 2-1 win was an good run out for the players with the game being played a positive tempo and it was obvious that the team is beginning to gel.
