Inverurie Loco Works v East Stirlingshire 20/7/19 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire concluded their pre-season with a closely contested 0-0 draw with Highand League outfit Inverurie Locos on Saturday.

Shire, having undertaken a busy pre-season schedule were looking to round it off on a high against a Locos side who had finished last season’s Highland league campaign in fifth. Derek Ure was looking for a positive performance in preparation for their Lowland League opener with BSC Glasgow, but Neil Cooper’s side would be no pushovers having proven their pedigree with closely fought matches against eventual League 2 playoff winners Cove Rangers last season.

The opening exchanges were controlled by Shire who showed promising signs of gelling as a team having welcomed 12 new signings during the summer in their bid to overhaul last season’s underperforming squad. However, despite the infl ux of new blood occupying most names on Shire’s team sheet, it was a familiar face in Adam Murray who nearly gave the visitors the lead after being teed up by veteran target man Peter MacDonald.

MacDonald utilised his excellent link up play yet again when he released Jamie Dishington into the Locos’ box, but the former Spartans’ man could only force an easy save from the safe hands of Andrew Reid.

The home side almost conjured up an unlikely opener when a simple long ball found Neil Gauld, but the front man’s audacious chip from outside the box nestled, to the relief of Jamie Barclay in the Shire goal, on the roof of the net.

If the ‘hair dryer treatment’ had been used by Cooper at half time, it didn’t work with his side looking every bit as second best as they had in the first. However, they had Reid to thank for keeping the score level when he denied the usually clinical Andy Rodgers from the penalty spot after MacDonald had been upended in the box.

Reid’s heroics did little to buoy the lacklustre home side as Shire continued to press for the opener. They nearly found it through a Mark Millar thunderbolt, but the midfi elder’s shot clattered off the crossbar to the dismay of the travelling support.

Despite having the better chances, Shire had to settle for a draw, but Derek Ure and fans alike can surely take heart from the relative ease in which an entirely new squad has gelled over the last few games. However, a truer indication of Shire’s hopes for this season awaits this weekend with a visit to BSC Glasgow.
