Fresh from a hard fought 1-0 home opening day League triumph on Saturday ‘Shire were back in action tonight against Edinburgh University Association at East Peffermill. This was the 5th time ‘Shire had visited Edinburgh University, winning all our previous matches in the City.

Manager Del Ure made 2 changes to the team from Saturday with Andy Rogers coming in for Ronan Kearney up front in the starting XI and Andy Shirra replacing Sean Brown on the substitute’s bench.

‘Shire got off to a whirlwind of a start, Andy Rodgers seeing a 1st minute shot being saved for a corner. Reis Peggie sent in the corner which Rodgers dummied for Craig Henderson who tried his luck from the edge of the box but again Barnes in the Uni goal saved for a corner. Although nothing came of that corner straight after ‘Shire were again on the attack and Rodgers, receiving the ball at the right edge of the box cut inside, sending a strike which Barnes saved at the foot of the far post. The home team were able to deal comfortably with the resulting corner.

With 10 minutes gone Kieran Gibbons sent a great through ball to Marty Orr on the right who then delivered a low cross ball from close to the bye line into the box. Rodgers let the ball go through to Robbie Young on the 6 yard line in front of goal but the forward was unable to connect and the chance was lost. Straight after Rodgers had a shot blocked from just outside the Uni box.

The game then began to settle with ‘Shire having the lion’s share of possession. Not long after Jamie Dishington, on the edge of the D, moved the ball to Orr on the right who crossed the ball back into the box to the head of Rodgers on the penalty spot. The ‘Shire forward was unlucky to see his effort drift just wide of the left hand post.

Following an unsuccessful corner a long ball in from the left fell to Young on the Uni 6 yard line but before he could react Barnes was able to collect.

2 minutes on and Dishington waltzed in from the right though 4 Uni players and fired off a shot from the penalty shot which was held by Barnes.

‘Shire then nearly made a corner count but the attack was just cleared by the Uni defence and they counter attacked, sending a long ball through to Patrick Baird. The Uni forward was on his own at the edge of the ‘Shire box but Jordan Tapping raced over to win the ball back and clear.

‘Shire were back on the attack in the next minute with Dishington cutting in from the right and releasing a shot which the Uni keeper did well to save at the post for a corner. ‘Shire were unable to make anything of the set piece.

Dishington was causing the Uni defence no end of trouble and in the 36th minute won a challenge in the centre and was running into on goal with only the keeper to beat when he was brought down on the edge of the box by Callum MacDonald. The referee was left with no alternative but to send the Uni left back off for the last man offensive. For the resulting free kick Rodgers sent a shot under the Uni wall but it was easily held by Barnes.

The final chance of the half fell to Reis Peggie 3 minutes before the break but Barnes was able to save the ‘Shire midfielder’s soft shot from the edge of the box.

In the 1st minute of the 2nd period Henderson cut inside from the left channel and curled in a lovely shot from 20 yards which just floated over the far stanchion.

Uni then had a rare chance when Paddy Baird set up Robbie Sinclair but he blazed his shot well over the bar from 15 yards.  Uni continued to press and Greg McColm had to clear a dangerous ball in the ‘Shire box.

In the 53rd minute ‘Shire finally made the break through. An over hit ‘Shire cross from the right flew over the Uni box only to find Gregg Wylde on the left who then sent an inch perfect cross back into the box which found the head of Andy Rodgers. The ‘Shire forward rose powerfully to send the ball into the left corner of the net from 6 yards.

A couple of minutes on Young ran into the Uni box and passed to Henderson to the left of him but the young ‘Shire winger sent his shot well over the bar.

‘Shire then tried hard to double their lead with a series of 4 corners in the space of a minute but in the end the home team were able to clear their lines.

‘Shire were forced to make a change at the back in 73 minutes with Eddie Malone replacing the injured Jordan Tapping.

It was this point in the game, despite being a man short, the home team had their best spell of the match winning possession in the midfield and pressing ‘Shire though they make no chance of note.

However, with 77 minutes on the clock Rodgers lobbed a pass into Gibbons who was challenged by a Uni defender and the ball fell to Jamie Dishington on the right. The right winger 20 yards out stepped inside and put ‘Shire 2-0 up with a low shot in the right corner of the net.

A few minutes later ‘Shire had a couple of corners, the 2nd of which was a result of Dishington 20 yard effort which Barnes did well to save. From the 2nd corner Rodgers hit a great 20 yard effort which crashed back of the bar and back into play.

Uni won their 1st corner of the match with 8 minutes remaining from which Sinclair had a header which was cleared. At this point the both teams sent on their last batch of substitutes.

It was all ‘Shire for the last 5 minutes of the match but they couldn’t add to their tally despite winning a promising free kick and 3 corners.  During the flurry of late ‘Shire attacks Trialist had a net bound 20 yards header cleared for a corner and Ronan Kearney header go just wide from 8 yards when he really should have scored.

In injury time Wylde whipped in a cross from the left which was nearly turned into his own net by a Uni defender.

The deserved 2-0 final result saw the ‘Shire record back to back League wins in the space of 4 days. The next outing for ‘Shire is this Saturday with a trip south to meet Dalbeattie Star in the League.
