East Stirlingshire v  University of Stirling 29/12/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire came from behind twice to earn a hard fought 2-2 draw with Stirling University at Falkirk Stadium on Friday night.

Shire Boss Derek Ure was looking for a reaction from his side after they slumped to their ninth loss of the season last time out against league leaders East Kilbride. However, a visit from Stirling University, whom Shire had beaten 6-0 in the reverse fixture, presented a fair chance of redeeming last week’s shortcomings.

Stirling University on the other hand were looking to make it back to back league wins for the first time this season having beaten Gala Fairydean Rovers 3-1 last week.

The home side came closest to opening the scoring in the early exchanges through Danny Ashe. However, the Shire skipper couldn’t direct his shot on target.

Shire’s struggles to keep clean sheets this season has been a concern for Ure who has spoken frequently about the need to stay solid at the back. However, those deficiencies were exposed again when Barclay conceded a penalty before being sent the wrong way by Uni striker Kieran Hall from the spot.

The home side were not behind for long though, with Connor Greene bundling the ball over the line to force an unlikely equaliser before half time.

Having weathered a Shire storm early in the second half, the visitors sought to exert some pressure of their own. Lewis Bonar took advantage after some good work from the Uni wide men to tap home a clinical second for his side; a sucker punch for Shire who had been well on top after the interval.

With the absence of talisman Andy Rodgers through suspension and the usually clinical Ross Allum misfiring it seemed inevitable that Shire would suffer their tenth defeat of the season. However, Connor Greene proved to be the saviour again when he nodded the ball home from a corner to draw his side level.

Greene’s goal, which makes him the joint highest scoring defender in Shire’s history with 22 goals, was almost rendered useless in the dying embers when Lewis Hunter’s long-range drive whistled narrowly wide before the referee finally blew his whistle for full time.

Ure will hope to build on the spirit shown by his side when they welcome Kelty Hearts while Stirling University will ready themselves for the university derby when they play host to Edinburgh.
