East Stirlingshire v Glasgow University 15/9/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire got their first win under new manager Derek Ure after beating Glasgow University 1-0 in the South of Scotland Cup on Saturday at Falkirk Stadium.

Shire were looking for a reprieve from their league struggles after suffering three consecutive losses while the fixture was an opportunity for Glasgow University to showcase their talents against higher quality opposition.

Derek Ure’s side threatened early through new club captain Danny Ashe who utilised his physicality, outmuscling his marker before failing to make the desired contact from Paul McCafferty’s teasing corner.

Andy Rodgers then danced around the visiting defence before firing into the side netting from a tight angle as Shire’s attacks continued.

Glasgow University struggled with Shire attacks as they went in at half time all square with a combination of staunch defending and profligate finishing denying the home side the lead they felt they deserved.

Shire’s wasteful finishing continued in the second half with Allum heading well over when well placed in the box.

Glasgow University’s stiff resistance, though, was finally broken when Ross Allum, as he so often does, found himself unmarked in the six-yard box to poke the ball home after a goal line scrap to give Shire a deserved lead.

There would be no late drama, however, as Shire held on for a much-needed win which ends their dismal recent run of form and sets them up nicely for their Scottish Cup fixture away to Highland League Huntly next Saturday.
