East Stirlingshire v Edinburgh University AFC 16/11/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

Two quickfire goals in the opening five minutes condemned East Stirlingshire to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Edinburgh University on Friday night.

Having confidently swept Linlithgow Rose aside in the South Challenge Cup last week it seemed as though Shire’s fortunes were taking a turn for the better.  However, they faced an uphill task in toppling Edinburgh University who found themselves four places ahead of Shire in the league.

That task was made harder when Patrick Baird took advantage of Shire’s lackadaisical start by turning the ball home in scrappy fashion to give the visitors an almost instantaneous lead.

Derek Ure watched on in frustration as his side then conceded a second only a few minutes later when some indifferent Shire defending allowed Santeri Kuivalainen the space to rifle home from outside the box to double the university side’s lead.

The students, who had arrived expecting a tough game, could have filled their boots in the opening fifteen minutes when Baird struck the outside of the post when clean through on goal; a let off for Shire as they threatened to implode in front of an increasingly frustrated home support.

Shire could and perhaps should have found a crucial goal before half time when the usually clinical Ross Allum side footed Adam Murray’s smart cutback over the bar.

Ure’s side came out for the second half revitalised and almost got back into the game when Allum nodded home in the box however the visitors were spared by the linesman’s flag much to the chagrin of the home support.

The attacking intent that was sorely lacking in the first half from the home side was now on full display with Paul McCafferty and Allum both going close to halving the deficit as Shire took hold of the game they had started so slowly.

Having survived a near endless barrage of attacks, the visitor’s resistance finally crumbled when Allum latched onto a long ball forward before rounding the onrushing keeper and squeezing the ball home from a difficult angle; just reward for Shire’s sustained pressure.

Those opening five minutes must have felt like an eternity away for Edinburgh University as they were subjected to a Shire storm led by Allum, McCafferty and David McCaughie who all threatened to grab an equaliser that had looked unlikely earlier in the game.

However, Shire’s fightback failed to materialise with Andy Rodgers being sent to the stand after making his frustrations clear to the linesman and Derek Ure given a warning by the officials who struggled to keep order as the final stages descended into confusion and controversy.

While Edinburgh University surge up the table into fourth, Shire must contend with being closer to the relegation zone than the leaders while also contemplating a tough trip to last season’s Lowland League champions, Spartans.
