East Stirlingshire v  East Kilbride 22/12/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

Table topping East Kilbride condemned East Stirlingshire to a 2-0 defeat in a clinical performance at the Falkirk Stadium on Saturday.

Shire’s form seemed to be taking another turn for the better when they swept aside Edupsort Academy last time out. However a visit from the current Lowland League frontrunners, Kilby, proved to be a daunting challenge for Derek Ure in his search for consistency.

Kilby, having won 5 games on the bounce to usurp Kelty Hearts in first place, were looking to make it six but faced a challenge having failed to win away to Shire in two previous attempts.

Perhaps it was no surprise to see Kilby take control of the early exchanges, however, with winger Paul Woods inches away from connecting with a cross that would have given his side a dream start.

Despite Kilby’s early dominance, Shire captain Danny Ashe ensured the visitors defence were kept on their toes when he nodded a header onto the top of the crossbar after evading his marker in the box.

The Shire defender’s effort seemed to ignite the attacking spark that has so often misfired this season with Steven Brisbane latching onto a Ure pass before smashing an effort into the feet of Matt McGinley.

Shire, having crept back into the game, were dealt a cruel blow when Kilby captain Craig Malcolm ghosted between Ashe and Grant to nod home BJ Coll’s teasing delivery.

Ure encouraged this side to persist in the way they had before Malcolm’s opener with McCafferty, Brisbane and the clinical Allum all going close to restoring parity with their visitors.

Shire’s refusal to yield to the league leaders was finally broken when Jamie Longworth spun on the edge of the box before firing an unstoppable drive beyond Jamie Barclay to the delight of his teammates who were beginning to feel the effects of relentless Shire pressure.

Ure will be proud of the way his side competed with the league leaders. However, a ninth defeat of the season already is an alarming milestone for a side with promotion aspirations that now look directed towards next season.
