East Stirlingshire v Cumbernauld Colts 9/2/19 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire swept Cumbernauld Colts aside as they ran out 3-1 winners at a gusty Falkirk Stadium in a convincing performance on Saturday.

Derek Ure, having steadied the ship after a rocky start to his career in management, was looking to build upon his sides’ unbeaten run that now stretched to four games after a gutsy 2-1 win away to Gretna a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile Cumbernauld Colts were looking for a repeat of the reverse fixture which saw them edge a thrilling encounter against Shire 3-2.

Sean Brown should have put the visitors ahead after five minutes when a long ball over the top sent him through on goal.  However, the Colts front man could only curl wildly over the bar as he failed to compose himself with only Jamie Barclay to beat.

Brown’s miss would come back to haunt him as Shire punished his wastefulness in devastating fashion.  Ross Allum picked the ball up just outside the box before releasing a perfectly timed pass into the path of the onrushing David McCaughie who promptly provided a finish befitting the fine move.

Allum, having set up the opener, doubled Shire’s advantage shortly after when he side footed Danny Ashe’s low cross home for his 14th goal of the season; a tally only bettered by Craig Malcolm and Stuart Cargill of East Kilbride and Kelty Hearts respectively.

The game looked as though it was getting away from Colts until Fraser Team nodded Stephen O’Neill’s cross beyond Barclay to give his side renewed hope.

Shire’s response was emphatic as they went in search of a third.  They were very nearly rewarded when a slick pass from the ever-influential Andy Rodgers set Paul McCafferty through, but the Shire winger could only smack the base of the post with the goal at his mercy.

McCafferty, not to be disheartened, set about atoning for his earlier miss by floating a clipped cross into the path of Rodgers who produced a deft finish to lift the ball beyond a helpless Jordan Pettigrew in the Colts’ goal.

Rodgers’ clever finish capped a dominant first half for Shire as they looked to narrow the gap to sixth placed Colts in the league to one point.

However, if Shire’s first half was a picture of attacking impetus and guile, the second demonstrated a quality that has been sorely lacking in Shire; game management.

Colts struggled to produce anything of note in the second half as Shire cruised to a third consecutive win.
