East Kilbride v East Stirlingshire 03/11/18 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

East Stirlingshire slumped to a comprehensive 2-0 defeat against East Kilbride at a windy K-Park on Saturday.

Derek Ure rubbished his side’s title chances this season telling the fanbase to “curb their enthusiasm”.  However, with his side a mere six points behind second placed East Kilbride the tie posed a real chance for Shire to close the gap and improve on a season that has been plagued with inconsistencies.

Similarly, Kilby were eager to put their first loss of the season against Civil Service Strollers behind them as they sought to keep within touching distance of Barry Ferguson’s Kelty Hearts.

Last season’s runners up started the brighter and could have taken an immediate lead when Sean Winter’s teasing cross crept narrowly wide of the onrushing Kilby attack.

Shire’s defence has been questionable at best so far this season, conceding 17 in their opening 10 games, however Ure would have been pleased to see his side hold firm in face of an early Kilby storm.

Having frustrated their hosts for large parts of the opening half, Shire grew in confidence and threatened to take the lead when Kris Faulds fired narrowly over from outside the box.

Shire, having put on something of a defensive masterclass in the first half, gave a stark reminder of their defensive frailty when the entire backline stood motionless as Paul Woods rounded Jamie Barclay before rolling the ball home.

The goal seemed to spark the hosts into life as they hit another shortly after through skipper Craig Malcolm who did well to divert the ball into the top corner on the slide after Shire’s defensive frailties made yet another unwanted cameo in a game where they had looked relatively solid.

Ure’s side were in danger of imploding spectacularly when Malcolm found himself through on goal again only to be denied by the feet of Barclay.

Shire faced an uphill task in producing a comeback against a defence that has only shipped six goals all season.  However, they very nearly found it when Andy Grant inexplicably blasted an effort over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Grant’s miss proved pivotal as Kilby eased to a victory that condemns Shire to a defeat that leaves them in 11th place, 10 points adrift of leaders Kelty Hearts.

East Stirlingshire turn their attention towards the South of Scotland Cup next weekend where they will look to restore some confidence against Linlithgow Rose while East Kilbride can look forward to a trip to Gretna where they will hope to continue their pursuit of Kelty Hearts.
