‘Shire travelled south today to Dumfries & Galloway looking for a 3rd win in our opening 3 League matches of the 2020/21 campaign. Our opponents, Dalbeattie Star, went into the game still looking for their 1st point of the season after 2 narrow defeats. Up until last season’s 4-0 ‘Shire win Islecroft had previously proved a tough place for ‘Shire to win points at with the 3 prior League games all ended up in scoring draws and it was therefore expected that Star would again prove to be tough opponents on their home patch. So it proved.
‘Shire made a few changes to the back division as a result of the knock Jordan Tapping received in the midweek match against Edinburgh University. Greg McColm moved over to the right centre defensive berth and Eddie Malone came in at Left centre defence and taking over the role as Captain. Manger Del Ure also gave Adam Murray his 1st League start of the season at Left back with Gregg Wylde moving to left midfield and Craig Henderson to the substitute’s bench. The manager also listed himself on the ‘Shire bench for the game as replacement for trialist.
‘Shire were straight on the attack from kick off, winning a free kick on the right which Gregg Wylde sent into the box but it was comfortably held by Darren martin in the Star goal.
Back came the home team driving in the box which Adam Murray was able to clear.
Star continued to press and Dan Orsi tried hit luck from just outside the box but his attempt was well over the bar.
A few minutes later ‘Shire broke up a Star attack and Rodgers received the ball into the centre circle which he passed to Wylde who was in the inside right channel. Wylde then sent Reis Peggie clear at the left edge of the Star box who then sent off a shot with was parried by Martin into the path of the oncoming Robbie Young. However, the ‘Shire forward scuffed his shot from 6 yards and the ball went wide of the post.
Star were very much in the game and their Trialist had a shot from 20 yards which Ross Connelly easily held. Straight after this Stewart Degnan crossed a great ball from the left which found Dan Orsi but he headed just wide of the post.
‘Shire won a corner in the 23rd minute from which Wylde found Eddie Malone, however, the ‘Shire captain couldn’t get enough on it and gave away a foul in the process. Immediately after, from a ‘Shire free kick 30 yard out, Andy Rodgers and Young tried a 1-2 to get through the Star defensive which didn’t come off.
Next up Jamie Dishington sent in a cross from the right which Martin in the Star goal was able to hold.
‘Shire were trying to build up momentum and Wylde tried his luck form 25 yards but the shot went was miss hit and ended up out of the ground.
With 31 minutes gone Dishington dribbled in the Star box from the right and fired a shot which was deflected for a corner. Wylde floated in the corner from the left and G
reg McColm just missed heading the ball but it then fell to Malone at the right of the box. The ‘Shire Captain took the opportunity to blast off a shot which Martin was able to save.
7 minutes before the break ’Shire went in front. Dishington sent a ball up the ring wing to Robbie Young who then crossed a beautiful ball which found Wylde at left post. Despite close attention from Dean Brotherton he was able to head home from only a few yards out.
Star were far from out of the match and had a great chance to draw level a minute before the interval. Dan Orsi drove a low ball cross the box from the right which was partly cleared to Lewis Sloan. The midfielder then hit a 1st time shot which was net bound and appeared to be tipped over the bar by Ross Connelly but the referee awarded a bye kick to ‘Shire.
The home team started the 2nd half the way they had ended the 1st. Within 1 minute Brotherston had a throw in from the right which found Calvin Cowie in the box. The Star midfielder sent in a great effort which was just deflected wide for a corner. Brotherston took the resulting corner and placed the ball to the near post where Orsi was unlucky to see his header, from a few yards, just clip the bar and go over.
8 minutes into the 2nd half and Peggie was unfortunate for ‘Shire when his shot from the edge of the box crashed off the bottom of the post and was cleared to safety.
Star came straight back with an attempt by Orsi from the penalty spot after Trialist had crossed from the bye line, however, Connelly was able to save and the ‘Shire defence then cleared the danger.
Star pressed on and shortly after sent in a 40 yard free kick into the box but the stretching Connelly was able to catch it. From this ‘Shire ran up the pitch and a good Gibbons cross was well headed clear by Jack Dickinson with both Rogers and Dishingston closing in.
‘Shire then started to created more chances of their own. 1st Young put in a great low ball from the left wing which found Rodgers in clear 6 yards out. The ‘Shire forward released a 1st time shot which Martin did well to save. Then Wylde drove into the box, stopped and fired off a shot which went just wide of the Star right hand post.
A couple later minutes later Star cleared a ’Shire free kick from just to the right of the box. Then a minute on an Adam Murray’s cross from the left found Marty Orr in the box but he was unable to connect with the ball properly and the chance was lost.
With 65 minutes gone ‘Shire make a couple of changes which saw a change in the team formation from 442 to 4141.
Next Wylde had an attempt from 30 yards which Martin in the Star goal was able to save comfortably.
Star moved to a 442 set up not long after as they went seeking an equaliser.
With 83 minutes on the clock ‘Shire went 2-0 up When Ronan Kearney, on the 6 yard line, swept the ball home after Peggie Murray had picked him out from the left wing.
Star had no time to re gather themselves as only 1 minute later Reis Peggie, picking up a misplaced pass out from the home defence, powered in with the ball from the half way line, passing 1 Star player, before releasing an unstoppable left foot shot from the edge of the box which flew into the Star net and put the Shirey Pirey into a comfortably 3-0 lead. To quote ‘Shire’s assistant kit man as the ball hit the back of the net “ye dinnae save them”.
Only 3 minutes later Dishington was brought down by Martin in the Star box and the referee awarded a penalty. Gregg Wylde stepped up to take the spot kick and shot low into the right corner of the net, increasing ‘Shire’s lead to 4-0.
1 minute before time Star had a chance to lead the deficit when after a ricochet in the ‘Shire box the box fell to the feet of a Orsi but he blasted the ball over the bar.
The final 4-0 scoreline didn’t give a true reflection of the game. For spells in the match the home team had given as good as them got and will have been disappointment to have lost by such a large margin. That said, it was ‘Shire who proved to be the stronger in the final stages of the game a deserved the 3 points. ‘Shire have now taken 9 points for our opening 3 League matches and have yet to conceded a goal. We have a free Saturday next week due to it being our turn to sit out the round of matches given the odd number of teams in the League. Our next game is at home against East Kilbride on 28th October.
