BSC Glasgow v East Stirlingshire 20/4/19 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

Derek Ure was left frustrated as his side slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against BSC Glasgow on Saturday.

Fixtures between these two sides have historically proved to be tightly contested, with their last meeting resulting in a 1-1 draw.

However, Liam Allison, starting for only the second time this season, almost put Shire into a rare early lead when he was sent through on goal, but BSC keeper Ryan Marshall held firm to usher Allison out of play.

Connor Greene put Shire fans at ease in midweek when he signed on for next season, and the supporters’ player of the year demonstrated his worth yet again when his marauding run from deep almost broke the deadlock.

Shire’s inability to craft any clear-cut chances ultimately left the tie finely balanced going into half time. However, the second half signalled a change in tempo from BSC after being second best for much of the opening half.

BSC’s renewed determination proved decisive. Ross Lindsay pounced on complacent defending from Shire before showing great composure to roll the ball beyond a helpless Jamie Barclay in the Shire goal.

Moments of complacency from Shire have become a title derailing occurrence with defensive errors ultimately costing Ure’s side any chance of catching runaway champions East Kilbride.

However, Ure would have expected far more from his side when a similar lapse allowed Jamie McCormack, formerly of Shire, the space to pick out Carlo Pignatiello who rifled an excellent shot into the back of the net to double the advantage.

The score line should have got worse for a beleaguered Shire, but some Barclay heroics denied the hosts a killer third.

Shire tried in vain to find a route back into the game with Ross Allum and Chris McKee both missing half chances to cut the deficit. However, Shire couldn’t pull off a late comeback and ultimately lost in a fashion befitting of their entire season.

Shire’s management had long been resigned on missing out on promotion this season. As such, work had already begun on building for next season with a nucleus of the current squad and recent additions such as Eddie Malone, acquired from Forfar Athletic, laying the foundations to a team that will hopefully substantially improve on this season’s sixth place finish.

Before that, however, Shire have a final chance at redemption with the League Cup presenting a favourable opportunity for some late season silverware.
