The Shire completed the League double over Selkirk but oh was it close.

The first 20 minutes it was all Shire and Paul Sludden seemed to be involved in everything. He had a drive just over, had the ball in the net but it was flagged for offside and also had a thunderous shot from 25 yards which rebounded off the bar.

Selkirk then came into the game and Adam Murray had to block a Healy drive which would have been on target.

However, on 22 minutes the Shire took the lead with a good team goal. Andy Grant was fouled as he cleared the ball but the referee played advantage and the ball broke to Andy Rodgers who passed to Sludden. The Shire forward then in turn sent over an inch perfect cross for Jamie McCormack to head home.

Jamie Barclay then saved the Shire when he had to make 2 important saves within a few minutes; he tipped over a goal bound shot and then made an excellent point blank save from Healy. This enabled Shire to hold on to their slender advantage to half time.

The 2nd half had just started when Steven Brisbane was clean through and he looked odds onto double Shire’s lead but he shot wide when it looked easier to hit the target.

Once again Selkirk came back into the game and in the 52th minute Shire failed to clear a corner properly and the ball fell to Sean McKirdy who drilled home from 18 yards.

Then Jamie McCormack had a clear chance with a header for the Shire from a corner but it went was just wide.

It got worse for the home team in the 65th minute when Captain Del Ure was dispossessed and Dale Baxter was able to shoot home from 18 yards. The Shire were now up against it with Selkirk being 2-1 up on merit.

The home crowd were starting to think that the game was slipping away and even a draw would be a good result. However, the Shire players continued to show their belief that all was not lost and with 13 minutes to go Andy Rodgers received the ball from a Sludden cross and although he didn’t make a clean contact with his shot he tied the game from 7 yards.

As the clock hit the 89th minute substitute Connor Greene sent the home fans into ecstasy when he headed in a corner which the Selkirk keeper Gregor Amos did really well in palming it out but it only went straight back to Greene who headed the ball into the net to put the Shire 3-2 ahead.

With the game in stoppage time a Sludden drive rebounded of the post and then with the last kick of the ball Jamie McCormack drove home to take the final score to 4-2 and take Shire’s winning run in the League to 7 games and the unbeaten competitive run to 11.
