Shire travelled to Innerleithen for the Lowland League meeting against Vale of Leithen at Victoria Park. Whilst Shire were at near full strength the home team were down to the bare bones due to injuries. Shire struggled for over an hour in the game but ultimately got a much needed win and ended a run of 3 games without a win.
Vale were the 1st team to create a decent chance but Tommy Patterson’s free-kick from 25 yards sailed just over the bar.
On 15 minutes the home team had to make a subsitution due to an injury to Patterson.
Shire then started to take the game to Vale and pressed them hard, especially down the right wing.
Jamie McCormack sent in a cross from the right into the 6 yards box but Andy Rodgers just failed to connect with his head.
Then from a Shire corner from the left Vale did well to clear a Kevin Kelbie header off the line.
Vale were next to show and Jordan Finnie had a mazy run from the right side of the Shire box, turning two Shire players inside out and firing a shot come pass across the Shire goal. Fortunately for the Shire there were no Vale players able to finish off the chance.
On 26 minutes Vale were forced to make a 2nd substitution due to an injury when Aaron Lynch replaced Steven Lynch.
Shire then took control of the play and Paul Sludden was next to try his luck. He picked up a loose ball in the Vale box, turned this way and that and fired in a shot which Ross Gilpin, who have previous kept goals for the Shire, held easily.
Near the end of the 1st period another powerful run down the right wing by McCormack ending with his cut back finding Kelbie free in the box but the Shire striker’s side-footed shot was well saved by Gilpin.
Into the 2nd half and both teams initially gave as good as they got but it wasn’t long before Shire were back on the ascendancy.
Shire created a great chance when McCormack swung a ball from the right wing over the to the far side of the Vale box which was collected by Sludden. He then crossed it back in perfectly to the head of a free Kevin Kelbie but somehow he placed his header wide from 6 yards out when it looked easier to score.
Del Ure then won a strong challenge in midfield and sent a lovely pass forward to Andy Rodgers who danced round 2 Vale defenders in the box and flicked the ball goalwards only to see the ball cleared of the line by Jonny Scott-Mercer.
By now it looked as though Shire were going to be frustrated by a stubborn set of opponents for a fourth week running.
However, in the 63rd minute Shire finally made the break through. A flowing counter-attacking move started from next to the Shire box when McCormack sent a long ball forward which found Andy Rodgers one on one with a Vale defender. Rodgers easily passed him and ran into the box and squared back to Kelbie who in turn passed onto Paul Sludden. Sludden, who was free in the box, coolly fired Shire into the lead with a shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net.
Not satisfied with 1 goal Shire continued to push forward looking for more to ensure the win. Allison did have the ball in the net but his strike was rightly disallowed for offside.
With a minute remaining of the match Shire finally scored a 2nd goal. Again this came from a counter-attack. Rodgers won the ball in his own half and drove forward for 30 yards and then sent a short pass to Kelvin Kelbie who was clear in the box. Kelbie’s initial shot was saved by Gilpin but the Shire striker kept his composure and slotted the ball home at the post through 2 Vale defenders.
